South African police intercepted two separate drug smuggling attempts at OR Tambo International Airport within a 24-hour window this weekend, arresting a Brazilian national found with R8.7 million worth of cocaine and, less than a day later, a Dutch national caught with 60 kilograms of khat concealed in luggage bound for London.
The Brazilian suspect, a 26-year-old, arrived at OR Tambo from Brazil on Sunday afternoon and was flagged during a search of their luggage, which revealed multiple blocks of cocaine wrapped and hidden inside.
The suspect appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 28 April on a charge of drug trafficking.
The arrests
The Dutch national was stopped later in the same 24-hour period while preparing to board a flight to London.
Officers discovered 60 kilograms of khat, a controlled substance under South African law, concealed in the luggage. The suspect was also arrested and faces drug trafficking charges.
Police noted that the back-to-back arrests involved distinct drug types, distinct nationalities and distinct destination countries, which they said pointed to a pattern of increasingly diverse international routes being used through OR Tambo.
The airport has long been identified as a major transit point for international drug networks moving narcotics into, through and out of Africa.
What the busts signal
The two arrests within a single day suggest sustained police pressure on traffickers using commercial flights through Johannesburg’s main international hub. OR Tambo has seen a series of significant drug interceptions in recent years, with previous busts including a R25 million cocaine seizure documented by SAnews.gov.za, and the March 2026 arrest of multiple women whose bail hearing was still pending at the time of this report.
The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court proceedings against the Brazilian suspect were underway as of Tuesday.
Bail conditions and a further court date had not been confirmed at the time of publication. The Dutch national’s case is expected to follow a similar process through the same court.
Both suspects are facing prosecution under South Africa’s Prevention of Organised Crime Act and related drug legislation.
Conviction on drug trafficking charges carries a minimum sentence of 15 years under South African law.
