Bafana Bafana red cards overshadowed a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, 11 June 2026.
Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both shown straight red cards in the second half, before Mexico defender Cesar Montes followed them in stoppage time, as reported by ESPN.
The three dismissals are the most ever handed out in an opening match of a World Cup.
How the Bafana Bafana red cards changed the match
Julian Quinones gave the hosts the lead inside nine minutes in front of 80,000 supporters in Mexico City.
Raul Jimenez added the second goal, finally opening his World Cup scoring account at his fourth tournament, and the contest never recovered its balance from there.
South Africa finished the night with nine men on the pitch. The result handed Mexico a first ever victory in a World Cup opening fixture, after five defeats and two draws in their previous attempts across earlier editions of the tournament.
Head coach Hugo Broos felt his side had grown into the contest before the dismissals undid their progress.
“Playing against the hosts always brings pressure, but I think we only really struggled in the first 20 minutes. After that, we had more of the ball and played better,” he said.
Broos calls second red card too soft
The Belgian accepted the first dismissal but took issue with the second, which he described as “too soft to give that as a red card” in his post-match assessment of the officiating at the Estadio Azteca.
“I don’t think there’s much to say about the first red card, but on the second, I felt the Mexican player obstructed mine. The referee saw it differently,” Broos said when pressed on the decisions that reduced his team to nine men in the Mexican capital.
The veteran coach was equally unsparing about the goals his side conceded.
“The problem was simple mistakes; twice we lost possession in areas we shouldn’t have, and Mexico punished us immediately with two goals,” he added.
What happens next for Bafana Bafana
The defeat extends South Africa’s long wait for a first win in a World Cup opening match, a drought that stretches back to the country’s tournament debut in 1998 and now covers four appearances on football’s biggest stage.
Sithole and Zwane both face suspension for the second group fixture, leaving Broos to reshuffle his midfield at short notice.
Bafana Bafana must take points from their remaining two group games to keep their hopes of a first ever knockout-round appearance alive.
