A suspect is expected to appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 May 2026, facing charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, after police in Mpumalanga exhumed the body of 54-year-old Solomon Grans Madonsela from a shallow grave in Bushbuckridge following an intensive investigation.

Madonsela was reported missing at the Masoyi Police Station on 4 May 2026. He had last been seen on 30 April 2026 when he left home driving his blue Volvo.

No further trace of him was found until police, acting on intelligence gathered during the investigation, moved to arrest a suspect on Sunday, 10 May 2026.

How police broke the Bushbuckridge shallow grave murder case

During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. A subsequent search of the property led to the discovery of a shallow grave in the yard.

Forensic experts, working alongside other role players, excavated the grave and recovered the body of a man covered in a blanket, as reported by The Citizen. The identity of the remains as those of Madonsela was established at the scene.

The speed of the investigation, from a missing person report filed on 4 May to an arrest and body recovery on 10 May, reflects a six-day investigative window that ended with the suspect in custody before the week was out.

The charges

The suspect faces two charges: murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court will hear the first appearance today.

At a first appearance, the court will determine whether the matter is remanded for further investigation, and the state will indicate whether it intends to oppose bail.

Under South African law, a Schedule 6 offence such as murder creates a presumption against bail, meaning the accused would need to demonstrate exceptional circumstances to be released before trial.

Crime in Bushbuckridge

Bushbuckridge is a densely populated municipality in Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, with a population of over 500 000 people.

The area has historically recorded elevated crime levels relative to its size, with incidents of violent crime, including murder and kidnapping, appearing regularly in SAPS provincial crime statistics.

The municipality falls under the jurisdiction of the Bushbuckridge Police Station, which serves a wide geographic spread of villages and townships across the area.

Cases of this nature, where a missing person report leads within days to a murder discovery, are often driven by community intelligence and tip-offs rather than forensic breakthroughs, given the resource constraints facing most rural SAPS stations.

Mpumalanga’s provincial detective services are expected to have taken over the investigation at the point of the body’s discovery.

The matter is expected to be remanded after today’s court appearance to allow police to finalise their investigation. The docket will be handed to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision on formal charges.

The South African Police Service has not indicated whether additional suspects are being sought in connection with Madonsela’s disappearance and death.
