Amazon MGM Studios released the first teaser trailer for Verity on Monday, giving audiences their earliest look at the psychological thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, with a confirmed release date of 2 October 2026.
Hoover’s Verity has spent years near the top of global bestseller lists, cultivating a devoted readership who have been anticipating this adaptation since it was announced.
The teaser arrived without a theatrical trailer preceding it, landing directly on YouTube and sending the title to the top of entertainment trending lists within hours of publication.
What the teaser shows
The teaser introduces Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer hired by Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett) to ghostwrite the remaining novels in a bestselling series belonging to his incapacitated wife, Verity (Hathaway).
Lowen moves into the Crawford family home, where she begins to uncover what the trailer frames as deeply disturbing truths about Verity.
In the trailer’s most prominent moment, Hathaway delivers a voiceover addressed directly to the viewer:
“Even with my continuous warning, you’re going to continue to ingest my words. But know one thing: There is no light where we’re going.”
The line is drawn from the novel’s opening, and its use in the teaser signals a faithful approach to Hoover’s source material.
Director, cast and release
Verity is directed by Michael Showalter, whose previous work includes The Eyes of Tammy Faye, The Idea of You and The Big Sick.
The film is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and releases in cinemas on 2 October 2026, as reported by Variety. A South African release date and streaming window on Prime Video have not yet been confirmed at the time of publishing.
Hathaway’s casting as the antagonistic Verity drew significant attention when it was announced, positioning the film as a potential awards contender alongside its commercial appeal.
Hoover’s novel was among the most read books globally in 2022 and 2023, driven largely by BookTok, giving the film a built-in audience well before its release date.
The full theatrical trailer is expected to arrive in the weeks ahead as the October release approaches.
