Eskom Gauteng load reduction continues this week as maintenance outages hit Soweto and Cosmo City

Eskom implements nine-hour maintenance outages in Soweto and Cosmo City as Gauteng load reduction continues through 20 April 2026.

Eskom has implemented a series of planned load reduction and emergency maintenance outages across parts of Gauteng this week, with Soweto, Cosmo City, Soshanguve, Diepsloot, Orange Farm, and sections of the Vaal among the communities affected by interruptions scheduled to run through 20 April 2026.

The outages are separate from loadshedding, which South Africa has not experienced for more than 200 consecutive days, and instead reflect ongoing distribution network maintenance that Eskom says cannot be safely performed while lines remain live.

Which areas are affected and for how long

Among the specific interruptions confirmed this week, Eskom cut supply to Diepkloof Zones 1, 2, 4 and 6, along with Orlando East in Soweto, for nine hours from 08:30 to 18:00 to allow technicians to carry out emergency work on the local distribution network. Cosmo City Extensions 3, 7 and 9, as well as Zandspruit, experienced a separate nine-hour interruption from 09:00 to 18:00 on the same day.

“The interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” Eskom said in an official notice to affected customers.

The utility added that the maintenance work “is necessary to address faults that could threaten local network stability if not resolved immediately,” and stressed that none of the work could be completed while the relevant lines remained energised.

Load reduction versus loadshedding

The distinction between load reduction and loadshedding is important for Gauteng consumers. Loadshedding, which Eskom has now avoided for over 200 consecutive days, is a system-wide measure implemented when national electricity generation falls short of demand.

Load reduction, by contrast, targets specific high-density areas where infrastructure is under strain, and is managed at the distribution level rather than the national grid level.

Affected communities this week also include parts of Soshanguve, Orange Farm, and sections of the Vaal, according to schedules published by Eskom Gauteng and verified by local government sources.

Residents in affected areas are advised to check the official Eskom schedule at eskom.co.za and to use the Eskom app or the EskomSePush third-party application for real-time updates on planned interruptions in their specific zones.

What Eskom says about the broader power situation

South Africa reached a significant milestone earlier this year when Eskom confirmed 231 consecutive days of uninterrupted national power supply, a record achieved through improved plant availability and reduced unplanned outages.

The utility’s Energy Availability Factor has continued to rise, and unplanned outages have fallen to their lowest level in nine years.

However, distribution infrastructure in high-density Gauteng townships remains under pressure, and Eskom has indicated that a programme of targeted maintenance will continue throughout the winter months to reduce the risk of unplanned failures when electricity demand peaks.
