The South African Social Security Agency has confirmed social grant payment dates for May 2026, with older persons set to receive their grants on 5 May, disability grant recipients on 6 May, and child support grant beneficiaries on 7 May; the agency has issued an urgent warning that beneficiaries who have not completed their annual e-life certification risk having their payments disrupted.
The announcement affects more than 18 million South Africans who depend on the social grants system. The dates apply to the 2026/2027 financial year schedule published by SASSA and the Department of Social Development, which confirmed the payment sequence will run across three consecutive business days each month to manage demand at pay points and banks.
May 2026 payment schedule and grant increases
Grants paid in May 2026 will reflect increases announced for the 2026/2027 financial year. The Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, and Care Dependency Grant each increased by R80 to R2 400 per month.
The War Veterans Grant rose by R80 to R2 420. The Foster Child Grant increased by R40 to R1 290, while the Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid each rose by R20 to R580 per month.
The increases represent a continuation of the government’s annual cost-of-living adjustments to social assistance, though advocacy groups have argued that the increments remain insufficient to keep pace with food price inflation and rising transport costs.
Beneficiaries who also receive the Social Relief of Distress grant are advised to check their payment status through the SASSA self-service portal, which the agency confirmed has been restored following technical difficulties.
“SASSA has noted the challenges to access the self-service system by some of our beneficiaries, and the agency can report that the challenge has been resolved,” SASSA said in its official statement.
The portal allows beneficiaries to check their payment status and complete the e-life certification process remotely without visiting a SASSA office.
E-life certification: what beneficiaries must do
The annual e-life certification requirement applies to identified beneficiaries and must be completed online through the SASSA self-service portal.
Failure to comply, particularly when specifically requested by the agency, can result in payment disruptions, a warning SASSA has repeatedly issued as the certification drive accelerates ahead of the new financial year.
Beneficiaries who have not yet completed the process are urged to do so before the May payment dates. The certification can be completed via the SASSA self-service portal at ssreforms.sassa.gov.za, or by visiting a local SASSA office if digital access is not available.
Biometric enrolment is compulsory for all new grant applications as part of the modernisation of the grants system.
SASSA said the agency has been rolling out the digital certification process to ease pressure on local offices and to reduce fraud within the grants system. “Failure to comply, particularly when specifically requested, could result in payment disruptions,” the agency warned in its official communications to beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries who experience difficulties with payments or certification can contact the SASSA toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11, available Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00.
