The MTN Shift Gaming Experience has returned for 2026, bringing competitive gaming tournaments to shopping centres across South Africa with a total prize pool of R350,000 spread across an event series running from April through August.
The tournament series pits players against each other in EA FC 26 and Beat Saber, covering the two dominant competitive formats in the country: the football simulation title that generates the largest sustained player base locally, and the rhythm-based virtual reality game that has built a dedicated competitive following.
Entry is open to members of the public at each venue stop.
How the 2026 series works
MTN Shift is structured as a travelling event that sets up in shopping centres at rotating stops, with competitors at each venue playing for qualification into later rounds.
The format gives players who may not attend dedicated gaming expos or esports venues an accessible route into competitive play, with no specialist equipment required beyond what MTN provides on site at each stop.
The next confirmed event takes place at Somerset Mall from 15 to 17 May 2026. The Western Cape leg will offer players in the Cape Town metro area their first opportunity to compete in the current series, with the tournament continuing into further venues through the winter months.
South Africa’s gaming market and why this matters
South Africa’s gaming market was valued at $1.08 billion in 2024 and is projected to more than double to $2.2 billion by 2033, as reported by IBTimes UK. With over 18 million mobile gamers and a growing esports infrastructure, the country is the most developed gaming market on the continent.
MTN’s investment in public competitive gaming is both a reflection of that growth and a contributor to it, lowering the barrier to entry for casual players who want a competitive experience.
EA FC 26, the successor to the FIFA franchise, remains South Africa’s most-played competitive gaming title. Beat Saber‘s inclusion signals an effort to diversify the competitive offer and attract a broader demographic, including players drawn to physical, movement-based gaming formats.
South African-developed titles have also performed strongly at the commercial level, with Broforce recording unit sales exceeding 10,000 copies in recent monthly charts, as reported by Games Industry Africa.
The local development scene and the competitive event circuit are increasingly reinforcing each other as the country’s gaming identity solidifies.
