Netflix’s Man on Fire, a seven-episode action series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as haunted Special Forces veteran John Creasy, launches on the platform on 30 April 2026, with all episodes dropping simultaneously for South African subscribers.
The series is adapted from A.J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel, previously brought to screen in 1987 with Scott Glenn in the lead role and most memorably in 2004 with Denzel Washington, whose portrayal of Creasy became one of the defining performances of the revenge thriller genre.
The Netflix adaptation reimagines the story on a longer, more character-driven scale, with director Steven Caple Jr. at the helm for the first two episodes.
What the series is about
Abdul-Mateen II plays a Creasy who is a deeply scarred combat veteran, living with severe PTSD and haunted by his past operations.
When his friend Rayburn’s daughter, Poe, witnesses a violent crime and finds herself in danger, Creasy is pulled back into the world he has spent years trying to leave behind.
The cast extends to Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy and Bobby Cannavale in key supporting roles. The trailer teases a series built around visceral action sequences alongside a more sustained exploration of guilt and redemption than the Washington film’s runtime allowed.
A prison break sequence and a scene involving Creasy leaping from a moving vehicle to a plane have already drawn attention in early marketing.
The shadow of the 2004 film
Abdul-Mateen II, known for his roles in Aquaman, Candyman and The Matrix Resurrections, steps into arguably the most iconic character in the revenge thriller canon.
Washington’s 2004 performance, directed by Tony Scott, remains one of the most-referenced action films of its era, giving the Netflix version a considerable benchmark to meet.
Early coverage has positioned Man on Fire as a potential companion piece to Amazon Prime’s Reacher in the action thriller landscape, appealing to audiences who want serious stakes and physical authenticity alongside their streaming entertainment.
Whether the seven-episode structure successfully carries the weight of the source material is the central question going into launch.
Man on Fire is available to South African Netflix subscribers from 30 April 2026. A second season has not been announced and will depend on audience response in the series’ opening weeks.
