A record-breaking July Fourth heat wave is set to make Saturday, 4 July 2026, the hottest Independence Day ever recorded across much of the eastern United States, with heat indices climbing toward 46 degrees Celsius.
Dangerous, record setting heat will expand across the eastern two thirds of the country, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecaster warned that “with the combination of high humidity, heat indices may reach 100 to 110” degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 38 to 43 degrees Celsius, over the long holiday weekend.
The blast of heat is being driven by a sprawling heat dome, a dome of high pressure that traps hot air and bakes the ground beneath it for days.
It is the same pattern that has fuelled some of the country’s most punishing summer stretches, and this one has parked itself over the busiest travel weekend of the season.
What the July Fourth heat wave means for records
More than 300 daily temperature records could fall by Saturday, and some of them have stood for more than a century.
Washington is forecast to reach 39 degrees Celsius, close to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, which would beat the city’s hottest ever 4 July mark of 38 degrees, set back in 1919.
Philadelphia and Washington could both edge toward 41 degrees Celsius, near 106 degrees Fahrenheit, testing all time highs rather than simply holiday records.
Overnight lows are also expected to stay unusually warm, giving little relief and stacking the risk for anyone without cooling through the night.
How far the July Fourth heat wave reaches
The reach is enormous. More than 165 million people across the Midwest and the eastern states have faced a major to extreme heat risk through the holiday, with the worst readings pushing the heat index toward 46 degrees Celsius, or 115 degrees Fahrenheit, in the most exposed spots.
Cities including Washington activated extreme heat alerts running through Sunday, 5 July 2026, with cooling centres opened and outdoor events reworked around the danger.
Holiday crowds, fireworks gatherings and long queues in direct sun sharpen the threat for older residents and young children in particular.
Health authorities urged people to limit time outdoors during the hottest hours, to keep drinking water and to check on elderly neighbours, noting that heat is among the deadliest forms of extreme weather even though it draws less attention than storms or floods.
What happens next
The heat dome is forecast to hold its grip into Sunday, 5 July 2026, before slowly easing as it slides eastward and weakens early next week. Forecasters will only confirm the full record tally once Saturday’s peak temperatures are logged, but the eastern United States looks set for its hottest Independence Day yet.
