Police have arrested a 37-year-old woman and an accomplice in Kwa-Thema, Ekurhuleni, over an alleged staged kidnapping to extort R40 000 from her cousin, Gauteng police said on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.
According to IOL, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the woman allegedly conspired with her accomplice to stage the kidnapping. The suspects were arrested on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, after investigations by Kwa-Thema detectives, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Crime Intelligence, and neither suspect has been named.
How the staged kidnapping unfolded
A family member reported the kidnapping on Thursday, 8 October 2026, and the suspects allegedly used the woman’s cellphone to demand R40 000 from her cousin. On Saturday, 10 October 2026, they allegedly contacted the family again and said they would drop her off on Vlakfontein Road, where police and relatives found her near Marikana informal settlement with injuries to her hands.
She was taken to hospital, and police announced on Sunday, 11 October 2026 that she had been found alive. Police had seized cellphones from three persons of interest before the arrests, and the investigation by detectives in Kwa-Thema, a township in Ekurhuleni east of Johannesburg, continued until Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
Charges in the staged kidnapping case
The suspects face charges of defeating the ends of justice, extortion and staging a crime scene. Defeating the ends of justice is a common-law offence that covers conduct obstructing the administration of justice, while extortion means obtaining money or another advantage through threats or pressure. No court date has been announced.
“Both suspects are expected to appear before court on charges of defeating the ends of justice, extortion and staging a crime scene,” Nevhuhulwi said.
The police statement also carried a warning about false reports. Nevhuhulwi said staged incidents divert critical police resources from genuine cases, and the statement ended with a direct appeal to members of the public about how they use police services:
“Members of the public are further urged to use police services responsibly,” Nevhuhulwi said.
Other staged kidnapping cases in South Africa
A Soweto woman was arrested in January 2025 for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to extort R200 000 from her family, according to a report published on Thursday, 30 January 2025. The Kwa-Thema case and a similar one in Limpopo were reported within days of each other in October 2026.
In Limpopo, relatives of a 28-year-old woman received a call demanding R50 000 and threatening to kill her if it was not paid. Police found her unharmed at a family homestead in Jane Furse and arrested a 43-year-old man, reportedly her boyfriend, on charges including extortion and perjury, and suspect the kidnapping was fabricated. Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Petrus Scheepers said:
“Police resources are limited and must be directed towards genuine cases,” Scheepers said.
