A Lions rugby player died at the team’s hotel on the Île de Ré in France on Friday, 16 October 2026, the day before the Johannesburg franchise’s Champions Cup debut against La Rochelle.

According to IOL, the Lions Rugby Company confirmed on Friday that it had received distressing news from France.

The player, who was reported to be in his thirties, had not been named, and the squad was preparing for the first Champions Cup match in the franchise’s history.

What happened when the Lions rugby player died?

Emergency services were called to the hotel in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré shortly after 10:00 CEST (10:00 SAST) on Friday, and French media reported that paramedics found him in cardiac arrest and could not revive him.

The Lions told local officials early that morning. Île de Ré is an island off France’s west coast, linked by bridge to La Rochelle. French prosecutors have confirmed the death.

The Lions Rugby Company announced the news in a short statement and said a fuller statement was being prepared. Early reports described a heart attack, but officials have given no cause of death, and the player’s name has not been released. In the statement, the Lions said:

“It is with deep sadness that we share that we have received distressing news from France.”

Is the Lions match against La Rochelle still on?

The match was scheduled for Saturday, 17 October 2026, at 18:30 CEST (18:30 SAST). European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR), which runs the Champions Cup, was expected to announce a postponement on Friday, and no new date has been announced. La Rochelle, a two-time champion of the competition, are coached by Ronan O’Gara.

The Champions Cup is Europe’s top club competition, drawing clubs from France’s Top 14, England’s Premiership and the United Rugby Championship, which includes the South African franchises.

The Lions are based in Johannesburg and play their home matches at Ellis Park, and the fixture was meant to open their first campaign in the tournament.

What support is there after the Lions rugby player died?

Hotel management said a psychological support unit had been set up for the South African players and staff and for hotel employees.

The Lions have asked for privacy while the franchise prepares a fuller announcement, and the club said in its statement:

“We ask that everyone please exercise sensitivity and discretion in the interim”

Friday’s death fell on the tenth anniversary of the death of Anthony Foley, the Munster head coach, who died at a hotel in Paris on 16 October 2016 while his team was in France for a Heineken Cup match against Racing 92. He was 42.
