Zendaya won’t be at the 2026 Met Gala — and the internet has thoughts

Zendaya will skip the 2026 Met Gala due to her packed Euphoria and film schedule. Here's who is attending and how to watch the red carpet live.

Zendaya will not attend the 2026 Met Gala, which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday, 4 May, with the actress’s team citing a demanding schedule that includes her ongoing Euphoria Season 3 press commitments and multiple upcoming film releases.

The news prompted a swift reaction online, with fans flooding social media comment sections with responses ranging from “Cancel it” to “Met Gala over,” a testament to the 29-year-old’s status as one of the event’s most anticipated attendees.

Every previous Zendaya Met Gala appearance has been treated as a fashion event in its own right, with her 2019 Cinderella transformation and her 2024 Giambattista Valli column gown among the most referenced looks in the event’s recent history.

A schedule that left no room

The decision comes during what is arguably the busiest stretch of Zendaya’s career. Euphoria Season 3, the long-awaited return of HBO’s critically acclaimed drama, premiered on 12 April after a four-year hiatus and is currently airing weekly through its eight-episode run.

The press tour alone has been extensive, and coming so close to the gala’s 4 May date, the logistics of a Met Gala appearance evidently could not be made to work.

Beyond Euphoria, the actress is also managing promotional commitments for The Drama, a project that has generated significant industry attention. Looking further ahead, she is attached to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Dune: Part Three, both major studio productions that will demand considerable runway in terms of preparation and publicity.

What the 2026 Met Gala still has going for it

Zendaya’s absence does not mean the night will be short on spectacle.

This year’s theme, “Costume Art,” takes its name from the accompanying Costume Institute exhibition and is framed around the idea of fashion as an embodied art form.

The dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” is expected to push attendees toward sculptural silhouettes and work that references five millennia of art history.

The evening will be co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos serving as honorary co-chairs.

Confirmed attendees include Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, BLACKPINK’s Lisa, Sam Smith, Angela Bassett and Zoë Kravitz. The Vogue livestream on YouTube begins at midnight South African time on Tuesday, 5 May.

The Met Gala remains one of the rare moments when fashion, celebrity and art criticism occupy the same space simultaneously.

Monday’s edition has enough on its slate to stand on its own terms. Whether the internet will be satisfied without Zendaya’s look is a different matter entirely.
