‘The Polygamist’, a South African supernovela, has become a global Netflix hit since it launched all 22 episodes worldwide on Friday, 12 June 2026, drawing millions of viewers across dozens of countries.
The show follows Joyce Gomora, played by Gugu Gumede, whose marriage falls apart after she uncovers her husband’s secret life with other women, as reported by The Citizen.
It is adapted from Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s 2012 novel.
How ‘The Polygamist’ became a Netflix hit
The story centres on Jonasi Gomora, a man leading a double life with hidden families, and the fallout when Joyce discovers the truth.
The supernovela was reworked into a soapie for the South African market, a format tweak that Netflix credits for part of its reach.
Gumede anchors the series as Joyce, a wife whose world quietly caves in scene by scene. The role leans on a slow-burn performance rather than shouting matches, and viewers watching from Lagos to London latched onto her unravelling as the emotional core of the show.
Netflix dropped all 22 episodes at once rather than dragging them out over several weeks, a bingeable strategy that let the drama snowball on social media. Word of mouth did the rest, pulling in viewers who came for the scandal and stayed for the slow unravelling of the Gomora household.
The numbers tell the story best. Netflix’s own release data, covering performance through Sunday, 12 July 2026, logged 23.1 million views and 223.2 million hours viewed, with five straight weeks in the Global Top 10 for Non-English shows and a peak of number two on that chart.
Where ‘The Polygamist’ topped the Netflix charts
The reach stretched wide. The Polygamist cracked the Top 10 in 62 countries, including the United States, Brazil, Mexico, France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom, and it hit number one in 21 territories, among them South Africa, Jamaica, Nigeria and Kenya.
Netflix’s separate H1 2026 engagement report, covering January to June, placed the show at number 58 globally out of more than 8 000 titles tracked, with 159.1 million hours viewed and 16.5 million views in its first weeks.
South African true-crime film 180 also landed a strong half.
What ‘The Polygamist’ means for South African TV
For the local industry, the win lands as a proud export moment. Swisher Post flagged the drama at launch, and a South African supernovela now out-performing thousands of titles shows streaming audiences abroad will happily read subtitles for a story rooted in African family life, betrayal and the messy business of keeping secrets.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos flagged the drama on the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Thursday, 16 July 2026, holding it up as proof that hyper-local African material can travel.
Its success sets a fresh benchmark for the next South African title chasing a global audience.
