Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o has been confirmed to play two roles in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, with the director revealing that the Kenyan-Mexican actress will portray both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the highly anticipated adaptation.

The casting was confirmed in a Time magazine profile of Nolan published on 12 May. The dual role had been the subject of speculation, but Nolan’s confirmation settles the question and adds a layer of structural ambition to a project that was already one of the most watched on the global release calendar.

The two characters Lupita will play

Helen of Troy is the more recognisable figure, described in classical myth as the most beautiful woman in the world. In Nolan’s telling, she is married to Menelaus, played by Jon Bernthal.

Her departure with a Trojan prince is what sets the Trojan War in motion.

Clytemnestra is Helen’s sister and her counterpart in the Greek mythological tradition. She is married to Agamemnon, played by Benny Safdie, and her story runs in parallel to the events of the Trojan War, tracking what happens in the palaces while the men are at war.

The decision to cast one actress in both roles is a directorial choice that opens the film to interpretation. The sisters are mirrors of each other in the myth: one who causes a war, one who wages her own.

Nolan building that duality into a single performance is exactly the kind of construction his films tend to reward.

Elon Musk has entered the conversation

The casting attracted immediate attention from Elon Musk, who posted on X claiming that Nolan cast Nyong’o as Helen of Troy because “he wants the awards.”

Musk’s comment was widely picked up by entertainment outlets including Variety, and generated significant reaction across social media.

The criticism is rooted in a long-running debate about historical casting choices. Supporters of the casting point to Nyong’o’s talent and Nolan’s track record of casting against expectations for specific artistic effect.

Critics argue the role should reflect a Greek or Caucasian historical context. Neither position appears to be moving the other.

What the controversy has done, practically, is make The Odyssey one of the most discussed upcoming releases months before it opens.

The Odyssey is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on 17 July 2026, distributed by Universal Pictures in IMAX. A South African release date had not been confirmed at the time of publishing.
