The Ster-Kinekor Throwback Cinema August 2026 lineup is here, bringing three beloved classics back to the big screen from Friday, 7 August 2026, at a nostalgic ticket price that is hard to beat.
Every ticket costs just R50, according to Ster-Kinekor, and the cinema chain has curated a timeless literary adaptation, an epic fantasy conclusion and a milestone anniversary screening for the month.
Screenings run at 17 selected sites across the country, so booking early is the smart move before seats disappear.
What to expect from Throwback Cinema in August 2026
First up is To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), screening from Friday, 7 August for one week. Robert Mulligan directs the Oscar-winning courtroom drama based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, with Gregory Peck starring as Atticus Finch alongside Brock Peters, Robert Duvall, Mary Badham and Phillip Alford.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) follows from Friday, 14 August for two weeks, giving fans a chance to experience Middle-Earth on a grand scale as the final chapter of Peter Jackson’s trilogy takes its rightful place back on the big screen.
The magic peaks with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, a 25th anniversary special release running from Friday, 28 August for two weeks.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson lead the cast, joined by Richard Harris, the late Dame Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane.
“There is something incredibly powerful about bringing older, classic titles back to the big screen where they truly belong,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

Bookings for all three titles are open now on the Ster-Kinekor website, with every Throwback Cinema seat priced at R50.
The screening runs are limited, and seats are expected to fill quickly, so moviegoers are encouraged to secure their tickets early rather than gamble on the door.

Gauteng fans are spoiled for choice with screenings at Sandton, Mall of Africa, Cedar Square, Eastgate, Cresta and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg, plus Brooklyn, Irene and The Grove in Tshwane, and Vaal in Vanderbijlpark rounding out the inland list.
Beyond Gauteng, the classics screen at MooiRiver Mall in Potchefstroom, Watercrest Mall in Waterfall in KwaZulu-Natal, Baywest in Gqeberha, Somerset Mall in Somerset West, and Blue Route, V&A Waterfront and Capegate in Cape Town, giving movie fans across the country a shot at the nostalgia.
To Kill a Mockingbird gets the month rolling on Friday, 7 August 2026, and its one-week run is the shortest of the three, making it the first booking to lock in.
From there, the countdown shifts to 28 August, when the Harry Potter 25th anniversary screenings begin their two-week stay.
