Disney’s ‘Tangled’ live-action filming has officially begun, with the cameras rolling in June 2026 on a remake that stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider.
The project reworks the beloved 2010 animated musical for a new generation, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Tangled live-action filming is set to run for around eight months across Spain and the United Kingdom, with Kathryn Hahn joining as the villainous Mother Gothel.
Who is in the Tangled live-action filming cast
Croft, known to fans from Titans, takes the lead as Rapunzel, while Manheim plays the charming thief Flynn Rider. Hahn steps in as Mother Gothel, fresh off her scene-stealing Marvel work.
Diego Luna joined the cast on Friday, 1 May 2026, in a newly created role made for the film.
Luna’s casting added intrigue, since his character does not exist in the animated film. The role was created specifically for the live-action version, fuelling speculation about how the story might expand. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson wrote the screenplay, and her involvement has fans hopeful the update will feel fresh rather than a copy.
Where ‘Tangled’ live-action filming is happening
Production is splitting time between Spain and the United Kingdom over roughly eight months. Croft has already debuted a short new haircut for the role, with family photos from Spain hinting that the cast is settling in.
Michael Gracey, who directed Better Man and The Greatest Showman, is helming the remake.
The remake keeps the core story of Rapunzel, the girl with magical long hair locked away in a tower, and her escape with a roguish thief. As a musical adventure, it is expected to revisit the songs and heart that made the original a modern Disney favourite.
The film joins Disney’s long run of live-action remakes, a strategy that has turned animated classics into box-office tentpoles. Tangled live-action filming arrives as the studio leans harder into its back catalogue, betting that nostalgia and familiar songs can pull families back into cinemas.
For South African fans of the original, the remake is one to track, since Disney titles land locally on Disney+ and in cinemas.
Until a date is set, the cast updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses are the main way to follow the project’s progress.
A release date has not been confirmed, which is no surprise given the long shoot ahead. With Tangled live-action filming only just underway and post-production still to come, fans should expect a wait, while casting reveals and set photos keep the remake in the conversation.
