Zendaya is at the heart of the newly released The Drama trailer, with the first look at Kristoffer Borgli’s upcoming film placing her performance front and centre in a story about love, secrets and emotional collapse.

The trailer opens with what appears to be a picture perfect engagement between Emma Harwood, played by Zendaya, and Charlie Thompson, played by Robert Pattinson.

Within moments, that calm begins to fracture as Emma reveals she has been hiding a life-altering truth that threatens to dismantle their future just days before their wedding.

Zendaya’s character drives the emotional tension

Rather than positioning the film as a traditional romantic comedy, the trailer frames The Drama as an intimate psychological unraveling.

Emma’s secret is not revealed outright, but the footage shows escalating confrontations, emotional breakdowns and a sense that her inner world is far more complicated than her partner realised.

Zendaya’s performance appears to move between vulnerability and defiance, suggesting a character caught between guilt, fear and self-preservation.

The emotional shifts shown in the trailer signal that Emma is not simply reacting to events but shaping them, making her the narrative engine of the film.

What ‘The Drama’ is about

The Drama follows Emma, a bookstore employee from Louisiana with an academic background in literature, and Charlie, a British museum director.

Their relationship begins to collapse when a deeply buried secret surfaces just before their ceremony.

The premise was previously teased through a fictional engagement announcement placed in a newspaper as part of the film’s marketing campaign, hinting at the contrast between the couple’s polished public image and private instability.

The film is written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli and produced by Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Tyler Campellone, with A24 set to release it in theatres on 3 April 2026.

A major year ahead for Zendaya

The trailer adds to what is shaping up to be another high profile year for Zendaya.

The Drama marks one of several major film projects placing her in complex, emotionally demanding roles that move beyond traditional genre expectations.

Her recent performances have steadily leaned into layered, psychologically rich characters, and early reactions to the trailer suggest Emma Harwood continues that trajectory.

While Pattinson’s role is central to the relationship dynamic, the emotional weight of the story appears to rest firmly on Zendaya’s shoulders.
