The remains of Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu have been found in Mozambique, bringing a tragic end to a week-long search after floods swept away the vehicle he was travelling in during an official visit.

Mngwevu, the MMC for Roads and Transport in Ekurhuleni, had been reported missing after severe flooding struck the Chókwè region, where his delegation was travelling.  

How Andile Mngwevu went missing

Mngwevu was part of an official delegation visiting Mozambique when heavy floods hit the area. The vehicle he was travelling in was caught in fast-moving water and carried away.

Search and rescue operations continued for a week, involving coordinated efforts between South African search teams and Mozambican authorities.

The remains of Mngwevu and three others were later recovered from the vehicle.  

Family confirms death of Andile Mngwevu

In a statement, the Mngwevu family expressed deep sorrow at his passing, describing the loss as sudden and devastating.

“This devastating incident has left the family, friends, colleagues, and the broader community heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss,” the statement read.

The family added that Mngwevu’s life was defined by humility, compassion and an unwavering commitment to serving others, noting that his work in public service had earned him respect across the communities he served.

“His passing leaves an irreplaceable void; however, his legacy of service, leadership, and humanity will forever remain entrenched in the hearts of all who knew him,” the family said.

Remembering Andile Mngwevu’s public service

Mngwevu was serving as Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Roads and Transport at the time of his death.

According to the family’s tribute, he was known for principled leadership and genuine care for others, qualities they said shaped both his public and private life.

Beyond his official role, the family described him as a source of strength and guidance within his home, emphasising that he was a devoted husband and father.

The Mngwevu family has asked for privacy as they mourn and said details about memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.

They also requested that the public keep them in prayer during this period of grief.
