Three armed and masked men forced their way into the Pretoria home of former minister Naledi Pandor on 22 May 2026, holding her at gunpoint before stealing valuables and fleeing in the family’s vehicle.

Pandor, 72, was in her bedroom when the suspects confronted her, while a second group held her husband at gunpoint in the bathroom as the house was ransacked, as reported by Eyewitness News.

The break-in took place at the family’s residence in Valleria, a residential suburb of Pretoria, at approximately 21:00. Pandor was not physically harmed.

What happened when armed men entered Naledi Pandor’s home

The three suspects entered the property wearing balaclavas and were armed at the time of the intrusion. They moved through the house and took televisions, a laptop and mobile phones before leaving in the family’s Toyota Cross.

The vehicle was later recovered by police in Mamelodi East, a township on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria. No suspects had been arrested at the time of reporting.

The South African Police Service in Gauteng confirmed that an investigation had been opened into the robbery. Officers from the local station responded to the scene following the incident, and the case has since been taken up by the relevant investigative unit.

No further details about leads or evidence collected at the scene have been made public.

Pandor served as South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation under President Cyril Ramaphosa from 2019 until the end of her term in 2024.

Before that, she held the education and science portfolios in successive administrations, making her one of the most senior figures in post-apartheid governance.

She took up the chancellorship of Nelson Mandela University in April 2026.

The investigation and what police say

House robberies targeting current and former public officials have become an increasingly visible concern in Gauteng, where high-profile home invasions have occurred in both urban centres and outlying residential areas.

The nature of the Pandor incident, three suspects in an organised group targeting a former minister at night, places it in a pattern that security analysts have described as premeditated rather than opportunistic.

The Democratic Alliance and other political parties were expected to respond to the incident given Pandor’s standing in public life, though no formal statements had been issued at the time of publishing.

The recovery of the family’s vehicle in Mamelodi East is the only confirmed development in the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and an update on the case is expected as detectives continue to process evidence from the scene.
