School holidays December 2026 South Africa begin when public school learners leave class on Wednesday, 9 December 2026, and the next school year opens for them on Wednesday, 13 January 2027.
According to the Department of Basic Education (DBE), term 4 ends for learners on Wednesday, 9 December 2026, and teachers stay on for administration days on Thursday, 10 and Friday, 11 December 2026. One national calendar covers every province, so learners in Limpopo and the Western Cape pack their bags on the same day.
School holidays December 2026 South Africa: the key dates
Term 4 ends a day earlier on the calendar than it did last year, when learners closed on Wednesday, 10 December 2025. Both closing days fall on a Wednesday, so the shape of December stays familiar.
Teachers return first, on Monday, 11 January 2027, and learners follow on Wednesday, 13 January 2027. Count from Thursday, 10 December 2026 to Tuesday, 12 January 2027 and learners get 34 days away from the classroom, a little under five weeks of beach days, braais and sleeping in.
The department has also moved on the policy behind the calendar. On Friday, 21 November 2025, it published proposed amendments to the School Calendar Policy that would create a single national calendar for all provinces and end the staggering of inland and coastal dates.
Independent schools are a different story. There is no single calendar for them: many follow the public calendar, while others use an association guideline or set their own dates, and some finish earlier. If your child attends one, the school’s own term calendar is the date that counts.
School holidays December 2026 South Africa and the festive long weekends
Once the last bell rings, the public holidays come thick and fast. Day of Reconciliation falls on Wednesday, 16 December 2026, exactly a week after term 4 ends, followed by Christmas Day on Friday, 25 December 2026 and Day of Goodwill on Saturday, 26 December 2026.
Day of Goodwill lands on a Saturday, so there is no bonus Monday off. The Public Holidays Act only moves a holiday to the following Monday when it falls on a Sunday. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, on Friday, 1 January 2027, both land on Fridays, which hands families two three-day weekends.
The Automobile Association’s historic guidance shows traffic volumes rising on major routes in the week schools close, especially on the N1, N2, N3, N4 and N7 corridors, with SANRAL and the N3 Toll Concession warning of high volumes from the mid-December weekend onward.
Term 1 of 2027 is already mapped out too. It runs from Wednesday, 13 January 2027 to Friday, 19 March 2027, just ahead of the Human Rights Day long weekend, with Monday, 22 March 2027 observed as the public holiday because 21 March falls on a Sunday.
The 2026 and 2027 calendars were gazetted by the Department of Basic Education on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, as Government Gazette Nos 52177 and 52178, and any change to the dates would come through a new notice from the department.
