The tragic incident unfolded near the Mpungamhlophe area, where two trucks collided head-on and immediately burst into flames.
The Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service, responding to the emergency, reported that upon their arrival, they encountered a horrifying scene with the vehicles engulfed in fire.
Despite the rapid response of the paramedics, they discovered that one individual had already succumbed to fatal injuries.
Rescue operations continued, with teams using specialised equipment to reach another individual believed to be trapped within the wreckage.
The condition of this person was still unknown when this article was published.
Transport Minister sounds the alarm over rising road fatalities
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has sounded the alarm over the recent uptick in road accidents, which includes the catastrophic R34 truck collision.
In a press statement, Chikunga referenced this incident along with others occurring over the same weekend, including a severe collision in the Western Cape that resulted in 13 deaths and 50 injuries.
These accidents, according to Minister Chikunga, necessitate immediate and decisive action to improve road safety, especially for public transport vehicles.
“We wish all the families, loved ones and friends strength during this period of deep sorrow. We also wish a speedy return to good health to all the people who sustained injuries during these sad and tragic occurrences,” she said.
With the Easter holidays approaching, Chikunga also called on all road users to exercise extra caution and to comply with traffic laws to prevent further accidents.
