The Goodwood supermarket robbery ended without any injuries and in the end, two foreign nationals were arrested.
Goodwood supermarket robbery: What’s the latest?
The section of Voortrekker Road (between Alice and McDonald Street) was reopened on Wednesday after the intense scenes that played out at a Friendly Supermarket.
We now have reliable information from police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut about the events that transpired in Goodwood on Wednesday morning. According to Traut, three suspects entered the supermarket at approximately 08:20 with every intention of committing robbery.
One of the suspects, police say, got spooked by a customer and tried to make a run for it. However, he was quickly apprehended by concerned locals.
“SAPS members attached to Goodwood police arrived on the scene and arrested a second suspect. There was, however, reason to believe that a third suspect was still trapped in the shop, and the Special Task Force was summoned to the scene,” Traut noted in a statement.
The robbery quickly turned into a hostage situation when it was believed one of the suspects was left behind at the supermarket. The area was cordoned off and a tactical operation was initiated to infiltrate the building and arrest the third suspect.
Turns out, there were only two men involved in the supermarket robbery and they were both in police custody.
“An Ethiopian male aged 35 and a Zimbabwean male aged 29 are expected to make their court appearance in Goodwood once they have been charged,” the police added.
