Another deadly shooting in Overcome Heights
On Monday morning, 15 September 2025, an adult male was shot and killed on Liberty Street in what police believe was a gang-related incident.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was gunned down in broad daylight, sending shockwaves through the densely populated informal settlement.
A pattern of deadly attacks
This morning’s killing follows a series of violent events that have plagued Overcome Heights throughout 2025.
- In August 2025, four men aged between 20 and 37 were murdered in a mass shooting on Mountain Road. Their bodies, riddled with bullets, were found at 05:30 (SAST).
- Earlier in the year, in March 2025, multiple shootings shook the community. On 29 March, two men were killed and three others injured. Just days before, on 25 March, a 21-year-old man was shot dead and four others wounded.
While motives are still under investigation, police have linked many of these cases to ongoing gang turf wars and disputes connected to the taxi industry.
Police response and investigation
Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed that detectives from the Anti-Gang Unit — a specialised police team focusing on organised criminal groups — are leading the investigation.
“This investigation is a priority. Our detectives are working tirelessly to determine the exact events that led to this incident,” said Traut.
Police have increased patrols in the area, but residents say the presence often fades after high-profile shootings, leaving communities vulnerable again.
Residents living in fear
Locals describe Overcome Heights as a “no-go zone” where violence can erupt at any time.
Parents say they fear for their children’s safety, while shopkeepers report losing business as customers avoid the streets after dark.
Community activists have called for a stronger police presence, better lighting in streets, and long-term solutions that address poverty and unemployment — conditions that fuel gang recruitment in the settlement.
