‘God of War Laufey’ revealed at Sony State of Play

'God of War Laufey' was revealed at Sony's State of Play on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, starring Faye as the PS5 exclusive lead in a brand new entry in the franchise.

Sony revealed ‘God of War Laufey’ at its State of Play showcase on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, announcing a new PlayStation 5 exclusive that puts Faye, the late wife of Kratos, at the centre of the franchise for the first time in its 22-year history.

The game was announced with over 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay footage, as reported by GamesRadar.

Deborah Ann Woll, best known for her role as Karen Page in the Marvel series Daredevil, voices Faye. Series producer Cory Balrog is attached to the project.

God of War Laufey gameplay: faster, more magical, more fluid

Where Kratos relies on brute force and weapon-heavy strikes, Faye plays entirely differently. She is faster and more fluid in combat, drawing on soul-based magic powers tied to her identity as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar.

These abilities let her interact with the environment and enemies in ways that Kratos’s physicality does not allow.

Kratos does appear in God of War Laufey but strictly in a supporting role, shifting in and out of Faye’s reality to offer guidance from across the afterlife. He is not playable.

The game’s combat designers appear to have built Faye’s system from scratch rather than adapting Kratos’s existing mechanics, which gives the gameplay a distinct feel despite sharing the same visual world.

‘God of War Laufey’ cast, setting and platform

The game is set after Faye’s death, the event that launched the entire Norse saga in the 2018 God of War reboot.

Navigating the afterlife as the character whose absence defined that game gives the story an unusual emotional anchor.

Jack Quaid joins the cast voicing a cosmic cube-style companion, and Perlina Lau plays a ribbon guardian named Rue.

No release date has been confirmed for God of War Laufey. The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive with no announcement of additional platform support.

What this means for the franchise

God of War Laufey is the first entry in the series to place a character other than Kratos in the lead role.

The Norse saga built substantial lore around Faye’s role as Laufey the Just, a legendary figure among the Jötunn people, and her true nature remained deliberately mysterious across both previous Norse entries.

A reveal of 20 minutes, used to close a major showcase event, is typically reserved for titles Sony expects to perform at the highest commercial tier.

The length signals that Santa Monica Studio has enough finished content to show, which suggests the game is further along in development than a typical early announcement.

What happens next

Sony has not announced a release window for God of War Laufey beyond its PS5 exclusivity.

Given the scale of the State of Play reveal, a release date announcement is likely at a major gaming event later in 2026. Pre-order details have not yet been released.
