Kyle Chandler’s turn as Hal Jordan in the ‘Lanterns’ premiere, which aired on Sunday, 16 August 2026 on HBO Max, has landed the veteran actor a Performer of the Week crown.
The honour came courtesy of critic Dave Nemetz, writing on Saturday, 22 August 2026, as reported by TVLine.
The episode, titled “Pilot”, is the first outing for HBO Max’s new DC series, and Chandler spends the hour casually walking off with the whole thing.

If you know Chandler as Eric Taylor, the hard-nosed but soft-centred football coach from Friday Night Lights, you already have half the blueprint.
He brings that same mentor mystique to Hal Jordan, then roughs it up: grizzled, rumpled, hungover and a long way from the clean-cut superhero template.
The premiere introduces Hal through a grainy 90s-style television interview explaining how he became Green Lantern.
Decades on, he rolls up to collect his Lantern trainee John Stewart in a vintage muscle car with KC and the Sunshine Band blasting, which tells you everything about this version of the man.
The ‘Lanterns’ premiere moment that seals it
That car ride sets the tone. Hal sizes up his new recruit and delivers a line of pure locker-room needling, the sort of thing Coach Taylor would never have said out loud but Hal Jordan absolutely would, and Chandler lands it without breaking a sweat.
“The big blue bosses may think that you’re hot st, but you’re just a fking substitute teacher, junior,” Hal Jordan tells John Stewart in the premiere.
He hands John the ring, then bails out of the car as it sails over a cliff, leaving the rookie to work it out mid-air. From there Hal is all easy charm, drinking with locals in a seedy bar and using his ring to conjure counterfeit notes for the jukebox.
The serious edge arrives when he faces down a macho militia leader without blinking, then interrogates an alien by quizzing him on Harry Potter to prove the man is not from Earth. It is a very funny bit of detective work that somehow still lands as menace.
What is next for Hal Jordan in ‘Lanterns’
By the closing minutes Hal is apparently dead, which would ordinarily end the conversation.
The series runs on multiple timelines, though, so there is room for Chandler to keep turning up in different corners of the story, and the premiere has left fans expecting exactly that.
Lanterns carries on over at HBO Max with the John Stewart side of the story now shouldering the weight Hal left behind. Whether Chandler resurfaces in an earlier stretch of the timeline is the puzzle this first season has set itself, and the answer is not coming quickly.
