Tesla Autopilot crashes hit a record in May 2026, with the company reporting 207 driver-assist crashes to US regulators in a single month, more than its entire 2021 tally.
The figures come from Tesla’s own crash reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, as reported by Electrek. That single month already outweighs all of 2021 combined, when the systems logged 157 crashes across the whole year.
Why the Tesla Autopilot crashes record matters
Those reports exist because of NHTSA’s Standing General Order, a rule forcing carmakers to log any crash where a driver-assist system was switched on within roughly 30 seconds of impact and the crash cleared a severity bar, meaning an airbag went off, a tow truck was called, someone was hurt or killed, or a pedestrian or cyclist was struck.
Across the full dataset going back to 2019, Tesla now accounts for 3 763 unique driver-assist crashes, roughly 85% of every ADAS crash the entire industry has reported.
ADAS, short for advanced driver-assistance systems, is the umbrella term covering both Autopilot and the more ambitious Full Self-Driving, or FSD.
How fast the Tesla Autopilot crashes record is climbing
The climb is steep. The year 2025 became the first in which Tesla crossed 1 000 driver-assist crashes, landing at 1 043. In just the first six months of 2026 it has already logged 826, a 73% jump year-on-year on a like-for-like basis and enough to roughly double the 2025 total.
Raw counts rise naturally as more Teslas hit the road and drive more miles, so a bigger number alone does not prove the tech is getting less safe per mile. The fairer measure would be crashes per million miles, but Tesla does not publish verifiable miles-driven figures for Autopilot or FSD, so nobody outside the company can work out a true rate.
What Tesla is hiding in the crash reports
Here is the twist. Tesla has redacted the narrative detail on 99.9% of those 3 763 reports, citing confidential business information, and the blacked-out fields include the software version. That single redaction means the public data cannot even tell an Autopilot crash apart from an FSD one.
Rivals barely redact anything; GM, Ford, Honda and Toyota leave almost all their crash narratives intact.
Tesla is now under a separate NHTSA probe over exactly how it reports these crashes. Fred Lambert, the editor-in-chief who dug through the dataset, put the pattern bluntly.
“The record crash count doesn’t prove FSD is unsafe per mile, but it does prove that the number of crashes tied to these systems is climbing fast, that Tesla is the only automaker hiding what happened in nearly all of them, and that the marketing has run ahead of the technology.”
Until Tesla either publishes its mileage or the NHTSA probe forces the redacted narratives into the open, the outside world is left counting crashes it cannot fully explain.
The number climbs every month, the software version stays hidden, and the gap between what Tesla markets and what the data can verify keeps widening.
