Angel Reese was smacked in the face by the Connecticut Sun’s Aaliyah Edwards during the Atlanta Dream’s 104-69 win in Uncasville on Thursday, 13 August 2026. The contact was later upgraded to a Flagrant 1.
The contact came as Reese attempted a layup through a double team in the second quarter, with Edwards bringing her hand down across Reese’s face and head area, as reported by OutKick.
Edwards fell to the floor immediately afterwards.

Reese turned, stood over Edwards and shouted at her before officials intervened. Moments later, on the Dream sideline, Reese gestured towards her neck to indicate that Edwards had also caught her there during the sequence.
Play was stopped while the officials went to the monitor.
Upon review, the foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 1, the second called against Edwards this season.
The second-quarter sequence came in a fixture that Atlanta would go on to win by 35 points, with the final score reading 104-69 in the Dream’s favour.
What a Flagrant 1 means for Aaliyah Edwards
Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) officials can upgrade a foul after reviewing it at the monitor, a mechanism that allows a call made in real time to be reclassified once the contact has been seen again. That review is what moved Edwards’ foul into the flagrant category.
Under the league’s revised 2026 rulebook, a Flagrant 1 carries a single flagrant point and a fine of $500. Points accumulate across the season, and a player is suspended for one game once she reaches four. Edwards now sits on two.
The distinction matters. A Flagrant 1 covers unnecessary contact and does not carry an automatic ejection, while a Flagrant 2 applies to contact judged both unnecessary and excessive and removes the player from the game. Edwards was assessed the lesser of the two.
Angel Reese, Brittney Griner and a season of contested contact
The incident did not come up in Atlanta’s postgame press conference. Angel Reese finished with eight points on 3-of-13 shooting, two turnovers and 15 rebounds, extending the rebounding output that has become the defining feature of her game.
Earlier in the same match, Reese had a shot blocked by Sun centre Brittney Griner, one of three Griner rejected across the night. Reese later blocked a shot and took a steal from Griner, a sequence the Dream’s own social media accounts chose to highlight.
The Edwards foul landed inside a longer-running argument about hard contact in the 2026 season. The Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas punched the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark in the throat in June 2026, and Connecticut’s DiJonai Carrington struck Sophie Cunningham in the face on a layup attempt on Saturday, 8 August 2026.
Whether the foul draws any sanction beyond the Flagrant 1 and its accompanying fine had not been confirmed at the time of publishing. Reese is set to represent Team USA alongside Clark at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany in the coming weeks, during a scheduled break in the domestic season.
