The Revolut outage on Tuesday, 20 October 2026 disrupted card payments and cash withdrawals while Google Cloud reported network failures in its London region.

According to The Stack, Google said the incident began at 06:08 UTC (08:08 SAST) in europe-west2, its London region, and the report counted at least 30 Google Cloud services with performance problems or failures. The region has three availability zones, and Google named europe-west2-b as the zone affected.

What happened during the Revolut outage?

Downdetector, a site that tracks user-reported faults, logged more than 1 500 problem reports for Revolut at about 08:00 UK time (09:00 SAST).

Revolut’s status page showed most services as down or partly working, including card payments, cash machine withdrawals, currency swaps and share trading. The company has more than 80 million personal customers worldwide, about 13 million in the UK.

Revolut said it had been working on a fix since identifying the problem on the morning of Tuesday, 20 October 2026, and it apologised for the inconvenience. The company did not say how many customers were affected, and its statement read:

“We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe,” Revolut said.

Why one Google Cloud zone can affect a banking app

A cloud region is a cluster of data centres in one area, and each region is divided into availability zones, which are physically separate sites built to fail independently. Google’s status page said multiple services were seeing “elevated errors and intermittent network failures” in the region.

Services named on the page included BigQuery, Cloud Run and Google Kubernetes Engine, a tool for running apps in containers, and Google advised customers to move workloads if feasible. In its update at 12:12 UK time (13:12 SAST), Google gave a cause:

“Due to a power event we had suffered an outage within europe-west2-b zone,” Google said.

The same update said the power event was mitigated and that partial recovery of infrastructure services should follow within 30 minutes, with other services to come after that. Google did not give a time for full recovery.

A Cloudflare outage in November 2025 left X, ChatGPT, Canva and Spotify intermittently down for about six hours, and a global IT outage in July 2024 linked to CrowdStrike locked Capitec Bank users out of their accounts.

Revolut outage and its Google Cloud partnership

Revolut and Google Cloud announced an expanded multi-year partnership on Thursday, 4 September 2025, under which Revolut runs its global systems on Google Cloud’s infrastructure and plans to use Google’s AI tools for fraud detection. David Tirado, Revolut’s vice president of global business and profitability, said at the announcement:

“Google’s world-leading AI and cloud infrastructure are an incredible asset,” Tirado said.

Revolut has not said whether the Google Cloud fault caused its disruption. Halifax, which Lloyds owns, said on X that some customers were “having issues” with its app and online banking, and Downdetector showed spikes for Lloyds, HSBC, Royal Mail and Rightmove, though Google has not linked those services to its incident.
