Cartel leader Daniel Kinahan, 48, was arrested in Dubai on 15 April 2026 in a joint Irish-UAE operation, the first use of the permanent UAE-Ireland extradition treaty.

Cartel boss Daniel Kinahan, 48, was arrested in Dubai on 15 April 2026 following a joint operation between An Garda Síochána and UAE law enforcement authorities, marking the first extradition proceeding under the permanent UAE-Ireland extradition treaty.

Kinahan, who is alleged to have directed a campaign of gang violence during the Kinahan-Hutch feud that claimed 18 lives between 2015 and 2018, is expected to be transferred to Ireland to face prosecution.

Kinahan had lived openly in Dubai for several years after relocating from Europe, rising to prominent status as a boxing promoter before US Treasury sanctions imposed in April 2022 effectively ended his involvement in combat sports.

Irish and international authorities had been seeking to apprehend him despite his long-term presence in a jurisdiction that previously lacked a formal extradition arrangement with Ireland.

The permanent UAE-Ireland extradition treaty, which was activated the year before the arrest, provided the legal framework for the operation. Kinahan’s associate Sean McGovern was extradited to Ireland under a separate special arrangement in 2024, a move now viewed as a precursor to the broader law enforcement cooperation that led to Kinahan’s capture.

How UAE authorities tracked Kinahan down within 48 hours

Dubai police confirmed that the operation moved swiftly once intelligence was received.

“Specialised teams immediately launched intensive search and surveillance operations, leading to the suspect’s capture within 48 hours,” Dubai police stated in an official release.

The operation was coordinated between the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and their UAE counterparts. Intelligence gathered over an extended period is understood to have provided the foundation for the final arrest.

The success of the operation is being viewed by Garda authorities as a validation of the international law enforcement cooperation model that Ireland has pursued with Gulf states since the Kinahan cartel’s relocation of key leadership to the region.

Garda Headquarters noted the significance of the arrest for its sustained pursuit of organised crime figures regardless of where they choose to reside. An Garda Síochána stated it remained committed to pursuing organised crime figures “wherever they go” globally.

The scale of the Kinahan cartel’s alleged operations

Gardaí assess that Kinahan controls approximately one-third of the European cocaine market, making the cartel one of the continent’s most significant organised crime organisations.

The Kinahan cartel is believed to have been responsible for directing or commissioning multiple murders during the 2015 to 2018 feud period, with all 18 feud-related killings remaining the subject of ongoing Garda investigation and prosecution.

US Treasury sanctions imposed in April 2022, which designated Kinahan and several associates as drug kingpins, cut short his boxing promotion activities and effectively removed him from legitimate commercial activity, though he continued to reside in Dubai.

What comes next in the Kinahan extradition case

Formal extradition proceedings are now expected to commence, with Kinahan remaining in UAE custody while Irish prosecutors finalise their case for transfer.

The successful application of the permanent extradition treaty will also have implications for other Irish fugitives believed to be using Dubai as a base, as it signals that the UAE is prepared to act on formal treaty obligations with EU member states.
