Yuji Yanase, the anime director behind The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker, is dead at 59. He died on Saturday, 22 August 2026, but the news only broke on Wednesday, 2 September 2026.
The announcement came from the anime’s production committee, as reported by Anime Corner, 11 days after Yanase died. Viewers had carried on watching the series week to week in that window with no idea the director steering it had gone.
Yuji Yanase dead after a myocardial infarction
MAHO FILM, the animation studio that employed Yanase, said separately that he died of a myocardial infarction on Saturday, 22 August 2026. His funeral was held privately with close relatives, in line with his family’s wishes, the studio added.
The committee’s statement leaned on affection instead of formality, sketching a director who set the tone for everyone working around him rather than one who simply signed off on shots.
That warmth was what the committee chose to lead with, ahead of any note about the schedule.
In its statement, The World’s Strongest Rearguard production committee said:
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden news of his passing. Director Yanase devoted tremendous effort to the production of The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker, leading the production team with his passion and warm personality. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and offer our deepest condolences.”
The isekai worlds Yanase built
Yanase spent much of his career in isekai, the Japanese genre where an ordinary person is pulled out of their life and dropped into another world entirely. It is one of the busiest corners of the anime calendar, and his name sat on a long run of its adaptations.
His credits included By the Grace of the Gods, In the Land of Leadale, If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord and In Another World with My Smartphone. He also directed The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne.
Yanase had been working on The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker when he died. The series followed Arihito, a character reincarnated in the Labyrinth Country who took on a support class known as Rearguard instead of a front-line fighter role.
The class was built around lifting the party rather than hogging the spotlight, with abilities spanning attack, defence and recovery. It made for a neat fit with a director his own production team remembered for warmth as much as output.
What Yanase’s death means for the anime now
The production committee has not announced any changes to the broadcast or production schedule following Yanase’s death, so The World’s Strongest Rearguard continues to air as planned.
MAHO FILM used its own announcement to thank the fans and colleagues who supported him during his lifetime.
Viewers picking the series up now are watching the last work of a director who spent his career building worlds for other people to escape into, and who, by his own team’s account, kept the room warm while he did it.
