007 First Light, IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond game, has been delayed by two months, with the studio confirming a new release date of 27 May 2026 and citing a need for extra polish before launch.
Release date pushed back two months
In an open letter to players, IO Interactive chief executive Hakan Abrak said the team had “decided to move the game’s release by two months, to the 27th of May 2026.”
He described 007 First Light as the studio’s “most ambitious project to date” and said the build is already “fully playable from beginning to end,” but that the extra time will allow developers to “further polish and refine the experience” so that it meets the quality players expect on day one.
Abrak thanked fans for their patience, saying the delay is intended to “set 007 First Light up for long-term success” and promising more updates in early 2026 as development continues.
What we know about ‘007 First Light’ so far
007 First Light is an action-adventure game based on the James Bond franchise and developed and published by IO Interactive, the studio behind the modern Hitman trilogy.
The game tells an original Bond origin story, following a 26-year-old James Bond, played by Patrick Gibson, on the mission that will earn him his 00 status and licence to kill.
Familiar characters such as M, Q and Moneypenny appear in reimagined roles that focus on shaping Bond’s early career, alongside new figures including MI6 mentor John Greenway, DGSE agent Miss Roth, Selina Tan and villain Bawma.
IO Interactive has framed the project as a clean break from previous game adaptations, building a version of Bond created “from the ground up for gaming” rather than modelled on any film actor.
The concept was pitched to rights-holders as a more stealth-driven, espionage-focused experience that moves away from purely gun-heavy action, drawing on the studio’s Hitman design philosophy.
Platforms and launch window
When it eventually releases, 007 First Light will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S.
The game had previously been dated for 27 March 2026 before IO Interactive’s latest statement confirmed the new 27 May 2026 timing.
For now, the delay means players searching for 007 First Light – or even typing ‘007: First Flight’ into search engines – will have to wait a little longer before stepping into a new digital incarnation of James Bond, as IO Interactive focuses on final polish across its most ambitious project yet.
