‘State of Decay 3′ closed beta playtests will open before the end of 2026, Undead Labs confirmed on Sunday, 30 August 2026, ahead of the zombie survival game’s 2027 launch.
Undead Labs kicked off its playtesting programme in April 2026 with a deliberately limited first wave of alpha testing, and the closed beta will give the community its biggest hands-on look yet, as reported by Xbox Wire.
More players and more platforms will follow as launch nears.
What the ‘State of Decay 3’ closed beta is testing
State of Decay 3 is built around a much larger, truly shared open world than any previous entry, set in a harsh wilderness where players juggle far more communities and survivors.
Deeper base building and systems management sit underneath all of it.
Untethered multiplayer is the phrase doing the heavy lifting there. It means co-op partners are no longer leashed to one another by an invisible radius, so two players can wander opposite ends of the map without one being yanked along behind the other.
Kevin Patzelt, creative director at Undead Labs, set out why the studio needs the numbers:
“We’re going to be expanding our alpha and then closed beta to more players over time, this is our largest map ever and with untethered multiplayer, we really need to take the opportunities to stress-test and fine-tune. If you don’t get access right away, rest assured there will be more opportunities throughout the year for players familiar and brand new to the series.”
How alpha feedback shaped the ‘State of Decay 3’ closed beta
Alpha testers came back positive on combat against multiple freaks, the game’s term for its infected enemies, and on improvements to the world’s lighting, sound effects, weather and overall visuals.
Cosmetic options drew praise too, including varied clothing, glasses and beards.
Character movement also landed well, described as smoother and more reactive. Undead Labs works to a principle it calls “Community is Survival”, and every playtest wave feeds straight back into development, from balancing co-op combat encounters to fine-tuning the new permadeath systems.
Permadeath is exactly what it sounds like. When a survivor in a player’s community dies, they are gone for good, skills and gear included, which turns every risky supply run into a calculation rather than a reload.
Where ‘State of Decay 3’ lands after the closed beta
Registration for future playtests remains open through Undead Labs itself, and the studio has said access will roll out in waves rather than all at once. That covers returning players and newcomers who have never managed a survivor community before.
State of Decay 3 is available to wishlist now for a 2027 release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and cloud, and it will be included with Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere support means one purchase covers console and PC.
Steam and PlayStation 5 versions are confirmed as well, which makes the platform expansion the thing to watch between now and the 2027 launch window. Undead Labs has committed to further opportunities throughout the year, with the closed beta the next milestone on that road.
