Greg James took a grief trip across the UK with his wife, Bella Mackie, driving 1 000 miles after their dog Barney died and his father’s health scare, in posts shared on Monday, 24 August 2026.
The 40-year-old Radio 1 breakfast presenter and Mackie, 43, an author, folded themselves into a 1999 Renault Espace and headed north, as reported by The Independent.
The couple had taken two heavy hits in six months.

They stopped in Lancashire at The Inn at Whitewell, where they were told the late Queen Elizabeth II once stayed on her 80th birthday, then pushed on to the Lake District for paddleboarding and a swim in Windermere.
James told followers that Barney would have been proud of Mackie’s paddleboarding form. He then accounted for the mileage, the car and his soundtrack of choice with the flat delivery his breakfast listeners knew well.
James wrote:
“Drove 1000 miles around the UK in a Renault Espace from 1999 and listened to the Phoebe Bridgers’ album 87 times so yeah I think I’m dealing with it all just fine thanks!”

Barney, a chocolate Labrador adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in 2019, was put to sleep earlier in August 2026.
Regular updates from the couple had built him a following, and Supervet star Professor Noel Fitzpatrick treated his arthritic joints, including a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament.
James posted:
“To be serious for a moment… thank you for your lovely messages about Barney. And my dad. And just about everything this year. Whether out and about or via our parasocial relationship. It has meant a great deal.”

James’s father, Alan Milward, suffered a stroke in March 2026 during a planned heart operation, then needed a second heart surgery in June 2026. James said at the time that his father faced “a long road to recovery.”
Weighing the wreckage against the wins, the presenter counted the Comic Relief stretch and the daily run of the show among the reasons the past 12 months had not been a total write-off in his own accounting.
James said:
“It’s been in some ways the worst but in many ways the best year. If I think back to all the fun of the show which included all the Comic Relief stuff, I feel so lucky to have a life like this and to have such brilliant people in it. Whether on here or in person.”
James added, looking ahead to the show’s return:
“I just hope things can be a little calmer and less intense for a bit. But I’m healing well! So much fun to come through and I can’t wait to be back on the show tomorrow!”
The Espace went back on the driveway and the alarm went back to an hour no sane person would choose. James was due back on the Radio 1 breakfast show on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, with his father’s recovery the one storyline he was still watching.
