The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that its biometric identity verification system will officially launch next month, following months of delays caused by labour disputes.
SASSA confirms biometrics grant system to go live in September 2025
On Monday, 25 August 2025, SASSA confirmed that all technical and administrative issues have been resolved and that the biometric verification system will now go live in September.
The system will require affected beneficiaries to undergo fingerprint or facial recognition checks before receiving their grants.
According to the agency, the rollout will be phased in to ensure that no eligible beneficiaries are left without access to their funds. SASSA added that beneficiaries who have not yet enrolled for biometrics will be guided through the process during payment collections.
The rollout is set to begin on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, aligning with the start of the new grant payment cycle.
In April 2025, SASSA announced that biometric verification would be introduced on 5 May 2025 for beneficiaries without formal identity documents, including those using the temporary “quad-7” ID numbers. However, the plan was postponed after a strike by workers at the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), which manages SASSA’s payment systems.
The delay raised concerns about grant fraud and irregularities, as the system was designed to strengthen identity checks and reduce duplicate or fraudulent claims.
Who will be affected
The biometric verification system will first apply to:
- Beneficiaries without green barcoded ID books or smart ID cards.
- Those registered under the “quad-7” temporary identity number system.
- Certain grant applicants flagged for identity verification risks.
SASSA has assured that beneficiaries with valid IDs already on file will not need to re-enrol at this stage.
The new system is intended to:
- Reduce fraudulent claims and duplicate grant applications.
- Improve the accuracy of beneficiary records.
- Ensure that only verified individuals receive state assistance.
SASSA said the verification process will take place at pay points, post offices, and designated service centres, with mobile units deployed in remote areas.
Beneficiaries are encouraged to keep their contact details up to date with SASSA so they can receive instructions on enrolment. The agency will provide more details on the phased rollout closer to the official launch date.
