Lionel Messi retired from international football on Monday, 31 August 2026, announcing the end of his Argentina career at 39 in a handwritten statement posted to Instagram after the World Cup final defeat.
Messi wrote the message on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, two days after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final 1-0 to Spain in extra time, as reported by the BBC.
He held it back for almost six weeks before deciding to make it public.

The statement was written as a notebook entry and set out a decision he said had been building for weeks.
Messi framed the announcement as the closing of a chapter rather than a farewell to the game, and confirmed that he would continue playing club football for Inter Miami.
Messi wrote in the statement:
“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply.”
He described the national team as a constant across two decades of his career, having made his debut in 2005 and gone on to become Argentina’s most-capped player and its all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 appearances.
