Nvidia’s Hugging Face acquisition was announced on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, with the chip giant agreeing to pay almost $13 billion for the platform millions of AI developers use every day.
Hugging Face is the open-source hub where machine learning models and datasets are shared, downloaded and picked apart by developers, which is why the industry nicknamed it the GitHub of AI.
The agreement was valued at close to $13 billion, as reported by CNBC.
What the Nvidia Hugging Face acquisition actually buys
The structure splits into two parts. About $11.9 billion will go to Hugging Face stockholders, while an equity-based retention programme of up to roughly $1.0 billion is set aside for Hugging Face staff who move across to Nvidia once the transaction completes.
For Nvidia, the appeal was proximity to the people doing the work. Hugging Face gave it a direct line into a platform millions of developers used to collaborate, test and share models, and that signal could help the chipmaker narrow the technology gap with leading American and Chinese labs.
Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang set out the commercial logic of open models in a blog post published on Thursday, 3 September 2026:
“Open models let startups, businesses, universities and public institutions build on advanced capabilities without training every model from scratch. They enable organizations to match the right model to the right job.”
Why the Hugging Face platform stays open
Nvidia committed to keeping the platform open, in line with how it already operates. Model makers, developers and users will still upload and download whichever models and datasets they choose, and the company said it would keep supporting rival silicon, meaning chips built by competitors, rather than fencing the hub off for its own hardware.
Huang put the open-platform commitment plainly in the same blog post:
“Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem.”
The approach came from the other direction. Huang said Hugging Face chief executive Clem Delangue came to him a few weeks before the announcement, which makes this a seller-initiated deal rather than a chipmaker hunting down a target it had circled for months.
Huang described that conversation in the same post:
“I am honored that Clem came to me as he considered the next chapter of Hugging Face and believed NVIDIA would be a great home for the company, its community and the future of open models.”
What happens next for Nvidia and Hugging Face
On what the two companies plan to build together, Huang wrote:
“Together, we will scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide.”
Completion is pencilled in for the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval, which leaves the better part of a year for competition authorities to work through it.
Until they sign off, Hugging Face keeps operating as it did the day before the announcement.
