Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson has won the Nobel Prize in Literature 2026, the Swedish Academy announced in Stockholm on Thursday, 8 October 2026.
According to The Manila Times, Carson, 76, is a classicist who was named at a press conference scheduled for 13:00 local time (13:00 SAST). The prize carries a gold medal, a diploma and 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million, and she will receive it from King Carl XVI Gustaf in Stockholm on Thursday, 10 December 2026.
Who is the Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 winner?
Carson was born in Toronto in 1950 and trained as a classicist, teaching classics and ancient Greek at universities including McGill, Michigan and New York University.
She won a MacArthur Fellowship in 2000, the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2001 and the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature in 2020, and she has translated the poet Sappho.
What the Swedish Academy said about Anne Carson
The Academy announced the award in Stockholm with a one-sentence citation that describes her work as bold, inventive and playful, and as a conversation with ancient literature that spans poetry, essays and translation. The citation reads:
“for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”
Ingrid Carlberg, the Academy’s permanent secretary, telephoned Carson with the news and said the writer was in Iceland at the time, listening to the wind. Carlberg said Carson was surprised but very happy, and the Academy described her work as sitting at a meeting point of two obsessions:
“the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning.”
Anne Carson’s best-known books
Among her books is Autobiography of Red (1998), a novel in verse that retells a fragment of Greek myth. The Academy singled out Nox (2010), an elegy for her brother printed on one continuous sheet of paper. She also wrote The Beauty of the Husband (2001), a narrative poem told in 29 tangos, and Float (2016).
The Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 and the Academy’s record
Carson is one of 19 women among the 122 literature laureates since 1901, the report says. Last year’s winner was Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai, followed by South Korea’s Han Kang in 2024 and Norway’s Jon Fosse in 2023.
South Africa’s literature laureates are Nadine Gordimer, in 1991, and J. M. Coetzee, in 2003.
Earlier this week, the medicine prize went to the pioneers of the optogenetics Nobel Prize, and the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 went to Francis Halzen. The Peace Prize follows on Friday, 9 October 2026, at 11:00 local time (11:00 SAST), and the economics prize on Monday, 12 October 2026.
